Old Salem Museum & Gardens features the original town of Salem founded by the Moravians in 1766. It was the site of the first settlement. It has over 200 staffers that play various roles to narrate the history. There are gunsmith, gardeners, potters and shoemakers to tell how the early settlers live during the 17th century. Take part in the puppet shows, learn how to churn butter, play colonial games, try the German paper-cutting art, make candles, and write with a quill pen. Adults can learn about heirloom plant varieties in the gardens, architecture lovers can check out the restored and renovated historic buildings and structures, and don’t miss the God’s Acre which is a Moravian graveyard that reflects the Moravian people’s modesty, dedication and trueness to their faith. Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem features a secret tunnel, early Salem house, old garbs which kids can try on, climbing structures and a variety of educational and fun activities for kids. Children can learn through playful activities. Paint or sculpt in the art studio, climb the structures, indulge in reading in the library, or play in the simulated village. The popular exhibit at the museum is the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Factory. Tour the factory and know the process of making doughnuts. The museum develops the children’s social, intellectual, motor and literacy skills.

SciWorks features interactive science exhibits, an environmental park with gardens and animal habitats, picnic areas, and a planetarium. Some of the permanent exhibits include BioWorks which tells about animals, conservation and forest, and PhysicsWorks which demonstrates about light, motion and machines. Travel through the solar system at the Planetarium, stroll along the beautiful gardens and walking trails and explore the nature, and come face-to-face with animals native to North Carolina in the Environmental Park.
